MEET OUR MAKERS
YENTL & MAAIKE
IN THE HEART OF SUMMUM YOU’LL FIND BLUE DAZE, THE DENIM LINE THAT BRINGS THE PERFECT CONTRAST TO THE COLLECTION EACH SEASON.
HOW DO DESIGNERS MAAIKE AND YENTL WORK?

Jeans might seem simple – two legs, a few pockets, and that’s it. But looks can be deceiving. Denim is timeless and ageless, and incredibly versatile. One pair of jeans can make you feel feminine, another tough, sexy, or sophisticated. And then there are the washes, stitching colors, finishes, fits, silhouettes, and fabrics. Every season, denim designers Maaike and Yentl have the honor of shaping Summum’s Blue Daze collection. “What’s special about this time,” says Maaike, “is that there really aren’t any trends. Or rather: all trends are happening at once. In the past, for example, the flare perfectly matched the fashion of the moment, and you wouldn’t wear other fits. Now, anything goes.”

Where does your love for design come from?
Their love for the craft started early. Maaike was already stitching fabric scraps together as a child, while Yentl discovered during art school that fashion was her calling. In their first job, they learned the ins and outs of denim side by side. Their tastes align, but differ just enough to spark valuable back-and-forth. “Your designs improve through someone else’s perspective,” says Maaike.

What makes denim so special?
According to Maaike, it’s just like leather: it molds to your body and ages beautifully. Yentl adds, “Its simplicity leaves room for creativity – from stitching to washes.”

What defines Blue Daze’s way of working?
Blue Daze blends boldness and femininity, with a boutique allure and just the right amount of edge. Every design starts from scratch, tailored to the current fashion mood. “Sometimes we’ll create a fit in just one single wash – that’s what keeps it special,” says Maaike.

How do you arrive at a collection and a design idea?
For each season, Maaike and Yentl find inspiration in European fashion cities—streetwear in London, elegance in Paris. Trade fairs, fashion shows, and visits to manufacturers fill their mood boards. Then silhouettes, fabric choices, and initial sketches take shape. “When the prototypes arrive, it feels like unwrapping gifts.”

What are you currently working on for the upcoming season?
For the upcoming season, they’re focusing more on non-stretch denims and cocoon fits, like white jeans and vintage washes. “We keep experimenting—that’s what Blue Daze is all about.”
